Generator burn rate

I was pleasantly surprised this morning fueling up for this weekend.

My generator tank took 18 gallons to refill after running two AC's, probably averaging a 50% load, for 36 hours last weekend...
1/2 gallon per hour.

The 5500 Onan in my previous TH used closer to 7/10th's a gallon an hour with two AC's running and almost a gallon an hour in 100+ degree temps.

I'm hoping the fuel consumption will improve after break in.

Thanks that's good to know. As I live in the desert our trailer get very hot inside sitting. Do or have you run the generator & A/C going down the road. ? That would help cool them off while heading out for a weekend trip. We do start the frig & A/C a couple of days before heading out
but that first night if still in the desert the coach is still hot inside.

I installed a 50 amp plug on the side of my house... so I'll usually bring the trailer home from storage the night before we head out and plug it in for the fridge to get cold, then switch to LP on the road.

I've never run the generator or AC's on the road... but I've heard of it being done. Normally it only takes about an hour for the inside to cool down while I'm setting up camp.

My RV's are at my home which is on five acres. I have a 30 amp plug that I use for shore power. Teton only has one A/C so didn't see the need to have 50 amp service. Now that the Voltage has 2 A/C units that 30 amp isn't going to cut it. Leaving on vacation in July when the temp is 100 to 110+ 2 A/C units should help.
You live in Texas where it's hot & humid. I live in the desert around Palm Springs Ca where it's Very Hot & no humidity.

When I picked up my unit after repairs in Tulsa the batteries were dead so we jump started the Onan and let it run until I got to my parking spot 50 miles away. The refrigerator was cold and the batteries were charged enough to extend the slides. Didn't have the A/C running as it was snowing and February in OK.

My uncle runs his generator while traveling down the road. He actually makes it part of his planning strategy.

Hope this isnt to dumb of a question, but ive never heard anyone doing this. I read the thread on generator burn rate, I guess running the gen while traveling doesnt bother your electrical connection to the vehicle?

I run mine in the summer time while driving to allow the AC to begin cooling prior to our arrival to the campsite.

First off... there are no dumb questions left, because I've already ask them all!!!

The generator supplies 120V to a converter that's powering the 12V side of the RV's electrical system including charging the battery.

FAQ's on converters...

FAQs About Power Converters/Chargers

So on the road you would have 12V charging the batteries from the converter and tow vehicle. Will this harm the converter or batteries in the trailer or tow vehicle, NO it would be the same as a 12V charge from a solar panel as outlined in FAQ #13.
