Funky Water

I have read threads on this subject before but I can't figure what's up with my water.

I drained the fresh water tank, refilled and treated with bleach then drained and filled, drained and filled, and drained and filled. The water seems good at first but it starts taking on a slightly funky taste and smell after a short time. A short time being a couple of hours at the most.

I have repeated the above procedure using the swimming pool chemical in extremely small does as per instructions. Always the same thing. Water has been from different sources so I'm sure it is not the water.

All I can come up with is the tank itself is the culprit.

The water is fine for showering, doing dishes etc.

Am I the only one experiencing this?

Thanks
Arlan

Can you isolate.. hot or cold side.. hot water heater may need cleaning if on hot side.

I wish.

It is both sides if the water is coming from the tank.

Right now we are hooked up to city water in a campground. Both sides are great water.

As soon as I switch over to the tank it is the same funky water. I have dumped the tank on this trip several times (again) to see if I can get good water.

I'm saying it is foul, it is just not really fresh.

Not a big deal. We carry bottled water to drink

Thanks for the thought on the water heater. I have experienced that on my camper before.

Ive never drank water from tank supply.. just me. Could be hose deterioration perhaps water pump seals deteriorating too. Really dont think its tanks if cleaned as you described.

Demand pumps' valves and diaphragms don't normally get slimy like toilet tank flush valves.

I think a Quartzsite rattlesnake crawled in the tank and croaked

When you've added sanitizer to the fresh water tank, have you also ran that sanitizing water through the pipes? I mean ran every water tap until you verify by smell that sanitizing water is coming out of the tap? I'm just wondering if the culprit is in the plumbing somewhere that isn't getting sanitized if the sanitizing water isn't being run through the plumbing as well as the tank. Since you say city water is fine, I guess that means the culprit would have to be between the tank and the city water input. So that makes for a pretty short length of plumbing to be the culprit, but it would include the pump itself. It's an idea though!

You may or may not want to consider bypassing the water heater if you're running the sanitizing water through all the plumbing. Depending on if you're certain the water heater/anode is not the culprit or if you want to take the time to include filling and flushing the water heater tank with sanitizing and fresh water.

Thanks. But yes I did that. I had the sanitizer in the tank and ran a lot of water through each of the pipes. Kitchen, lavatory, shower, toilet and washer dryer. Hot and cold. I will do it one more time just for the heck of it.

And my water heater does not have an anode. So that's not the problem.

Thanks
Arlan

Hi Arlan,
In your first post for this thread you said "I drained the fresh water tank, refilled and treated with bleach then drained and filled, drained and filled, and drained and filled." I didn't see anywhere that you mentioned how long you let the treated water sit until you drained it. Some threads I've seen say 3-4 hours but I always let mine sit for 24+ hours before draining. Just another thought since I didn't see it mentioned. Hope you're at a campground other than in the AZ desert.

Hi Dale,

Yeah, I let is sit about 24 hours. I will have to do it again when in cools down out here.

We are back in Arizona now. Our trip north did not work out as we hoped it would.

Thanks
Arlan

Sorry your trip didn't turn out very well. When you get things figured out would you try and remember where this thread is and post your findings. It's probably a problem and solution we should all keep in the back of our minds.
