exhaust wrap for heat and sound reduction

I was thinking about installing a good or thick header or exhaust wrap on the Cummins Onan generator to reduce mostly sound.
I want to find out if anyone has done this, what product they used successfully and if there are any potential downsides. I want to make sure that I'm not damaging anything.

Thanks!

Don't know for sure but I don't think it will reduce sound levels. I wrapped the exhaust on my Can Am and it did reduce a bit of heat.

How about a lawnmower muffler on the end of the pipe?

I think the noise is a resonance from the pipe from under the RV. I'm thinking about a weight.

I'll be watching this thread for ideas......Leo has insulated the generator compartment - it helped some but not alot......

I did call Onan and the said do not place anything ON the generator -it must be at least 3" away!

My last TH came generator prepped and I installed an Onan I bought new off eBay... @ 1/2 the cost quoted by the dealer to install. I did something similar to your idea and what's mentioned above.

I lined the inside of the generator box with automotive self adhesive Dynamat type (I bought the less expensive asphalt based alternative instead of the name brand) sound deadening sheets. The difference in the exterior noise level compared to a friends Onan wasn't noticeable but with a wrap of the knuckles to the generator box the resonance/vibration of the box was considerably less.

The Onan 5500 generators are air cooled from the bottom of the unit and one of the important aspects of the installation was to run a test comparing the temperature difference between the intake and exhaust of the cooling air flow. Based on the importance of this test I would not make any modifications underneath the unit that might impede the cooling air flow.

Also, the Onan generators have an internal muffler/spark arrestor so I'm not sure if it's advisable to add an additional muffler to the end of the tailpipe.

You can learn a lot about the operation of your Onan generator from the installation manual.
