Discolored fuel at the fuel station

I know I have seen a thread on this but for the life of me I can't find it. When I first pump fuel out of my fuel station it is kind of brown colored? Any ideas. It cleans up after about a gal.

Brown may indicate rust!

The fuel station on my 3905 used to do that. My fuel came out more of a black color than brown. What I started doing was. Turning off the power to the pump, then drain the fuel that was in the hose on the ground. If you want to be more enveriomently friendly you can drain it somewhere else.

My discolored fuel problem has cleared up since I started doing above mentioned. I think that the fuel sitting in the hose was the problem.

I'm sure that is exactly the problem!!!

I'm glad I read this thread because I usually only pump directly into the generator tank and have never seen or noticed discoloration of the gas coming from the pump.

I go to great measure to keep my generator tank full and use Sea Foam to prevent condensation and varnishing. The last thing I want to do is pump contaminated fuel into my generator tank that might cause issues with the on board Onan.

Great Tip!!! Thanks Arlan.

I say brown but black/brown. I will give that a try Arlan. It has to be something like that because it goes away. I'm going to use it in a couple weeks and will check it out. Thanks for the input.

What did Dutchmen use for a gas hose? It is rated for fuel line use? That would be my first guess. Sounds like the fuel is pulling something out of the hose, I would be watching for deterioration.

The reason I mentioned rust which no one is considering is because, at one of my factory tours I saw stacks of fuel tanks sitting outside in the rain with open spouts. Imagine that! It was just a thought. Once particles settle pump picks it up in the area its sitting. If there is a filter somewhere checking that would reveal rust particles or not.

If that were the case a filter change and a couple of refills should solve the problem. Hopefully its what others are suggesting just sitting in the hose discoloring. Dont understand that given the quality of hose they use..

Yes, there have been many past threads about this on other forums. It is usually the hose causing it. Many have replaced the hose with fuel compatible hose and never had another problem.

Thanks for the input everybody. I can see were with little use they may also get rust in the tank if you don't keep them full all the time. And come to think of it I didn't see an inline filter. Has anybody put one in.......and is there an inline filter to the generator?

On the fuel tanks, what is the best way to store them. I don't boondock very often and would be hooked up most of the time, but I still want to have fuel for the generator in case of emergencies or an occasional pull over when we take a break. Full with Stabl? Also, the spare tank. Don't see me using it. Keep it empty or again, full and a fuel stabilizer?
Thanks,
Rusty
