We are currently spending the New Year's weekend camping and successfully using our new Winegard Trav'ler satellite system and DirecTv Genie wireless. It's wonderful that all of our TV's can now have different shows on. It surprised us that we also get our local channels, which we didn't get prior to the Genie system when it was just the 101 satellite that we got (we are about 25 miles from home).

Nice.... hey, question for ya. You don't happen to go by another name on a GL1800 board like this do ya?

Reason I ask is, just finding it a coincidence that I've read posts that you & he are both from the Tucson area, and you're both 'camping' just a few miles from home this weekend. Made me curious...

You should be able to get your local channels within approx 250 miles from your home location. Those channels are spot beamed down, so the footprint is much narrower.

As we travel, if we are outside of our home area, to the point I do not have local channels, a quick call to DirecTV to pass the physical location, they refresh the signal, and we are off to the races. They are looking to start allowing physical location to be changed on their web site, unsure though when that will happen, it would make setting much easier, especially if you update that address while en route.

Before I knew you could call Direct TV to get the local channels wherever you are at... I signed up for Distant Network Access for an additional $15 per month.

I've decided to keep this additional charge because it saves the hassle of having to call, and as an added benefit I have the East Coast feed on my Distant Network Access and pick up the West Coast feed over the air. So with sports programming I can watch two different football/basketball games, East Coast/West Coast, on the same network channel (ABC/CBS/NBC/FOX) on the inside/outside TVs at the same time.

The only problem is the local New York news is very depressing!!!
