Clearing off the Snow

Howdy,

Over thinking things is one of the bad habits that I can’t seem to shake. So today I’m overthinking the snow on the roof of the Voltage.

Its 9:45am, 18” of snow on the ground, and it’s supposed to keep snowing until midnight. I know the dealers don’t clear snow off the roofs of the units on their lots (I think?). But I’ve always cleaned off the roof of my units whenever it got real deep. I would suppose the weight of that much snow would be pretty significant..?..

Oh well, heading outside to do the first of probably two clean offs.

Should have headed south last week…

Sorry to hear about your dilemma... We got about 15" so far.
For what its worth, I followed a friends advice and put a cover over our RV. The wind keeps whipping the cover up and down shaking the snow off!!!
I do love it when a plan comes together but in this case I just got lucky..
Best of luck to all in the path of the blizzard of 2016..

So far the wind has been to my advantage too. When I went out to check it, there really wasn't that much snow on it thank heavens. So, I ran the snow blower in the driveway for what will likely be the first of three runs. It's a 10hp, 32" wide two stage and it was thumping, snow was over the top of the chute already. Oh well, a good day to stay home and eat chili and brownies.

You folks are getting in one day, about what we get for the year.

It could be worse, you could live here.

Be careful on the ladder and don't get too aggressive with the shovelling, you don't want to rip your roof membrane.

I'm gonna toss another load of wood in the stove and go back to hibernating for awhile.

Take care of yourselves and don't over do it. We're thinking of ya'll.

Here's what I'm dealing with!! That's a pic of our pole barn. See if you can find 3 cars and an RV...

That's about 2 hours after my first pass!!

Pushing that plow while sitting inside a warm pickup beats shoveling or snow blowing in my book ..

And our power hasn't gone out yet...

Been there done that, got the tee shirt
Had a blower once. Used it the first winter and, like you, walked into the house looking like the abominable snowman ..
My driveway is 140 ft long. Took a lot of alcohol to get warm!!

The next winter, to my relief, I couldn't get it to start... Sold it and got what they call a personal snowplow. It uses a 12v electric winch to raise and lower the blade but you have to get out and change the blade angle manually. It even worked on a 30" snowfall!!
Its about 10 years old and still going. Just needs a little lube and an occasional wire brushing of the electric terminals..

I wouldn't worry about the snow on the roof. The park we are staying at had some folks clearing their roofs...however, one of them tore their roof membrane. Plus, that's a long way to fall if you slip. I have not bothered, as snow is a great insulation...

Here is us this morning...

Lots of heat! I have a propane service and a 120 gallon tank...propane is about half the cost per gallon if filling cylinders. With the cold snap last week (mid teens) and this snow, we've used about 40 gallons.

I am on the southern edge of that storm. We got mostly sleet, ice and idiots. Cale is further into the beast than I am. You can heat anything with enough BTU's aka Brute Thermal force.

I am supposed to haul my camper up to my office later today, still deciding if that is going to happen or not.

You got them there too?

A week ago Saturday, they had about 4" of snow down the valley, as we're sitting having coffee listening to the news. There was half a dozen crashes, fire and rescue got called out to all of them, so they weren't fender benders.

There was a rollover that they responded to, while on scene there was two more crashes at the same scene and both of them ran into the fire truck.

Amazing, winter comes every year but it's a complete surprise to the idiots.

It's so true, you can't cure stupid.

It really is so true.. In our neck of the woods, people go out and get 4x4's or AWD vehicles to drive in the snow.. So they just hit the snow covered roads .. ending up causing problems for themselves and every one else. I'd bet less than half of them even carry a shovel. Most don't realize that they cant stop any faster than a 2WD!!
Go Figure.

When I got my first 4X4 I was very lucky to have a friend who enlightened me to some of the realities of 4 wheeling.

When they forecast snow here, I usually put a couple of sandbags, over the rear axle in the back of my truck, a shovel and a 30 ft long 3/4" poly tow rope (part of my surf fishing gear). Owning a 4x4 for the last ten years, with those few things, I haven't gotten into anything I couldn't get myself out of. I did manage to recover each of my sons 2 wheel drives cars from snow drifts, and a neighbor or two over the years. Sorry, I don't mean to sound like I'm bragging, I really do sympathize with those who get stuck in situations because they just don't know any better...

To each his own, is all I can say.. I kinda like to see it snow and then I'm glad to see it go... Grew up here with the seasonal changes.. and look forward to every one.. The occasional storm just comes with the territory..
All the best.

My opinion:

Snow is great when you go to visit it, ski on it, and/or play in it.

Snow sucks when you have to live in it.

Your mileage may vary...

I agree with Pat, the changing seasons all have something to offer.

Just hope our dollar will have regained some of it's losses by next year, come about the middle of December I want to be able to have a man made change of seasons. Before I kick it I really want to see a desert bloom.

I've not been able to get out to our trailer as they haven't plowed the lot till yesterday. We received 31" this past weekend. Luckily we have the cover on the unit as well as the tires covered but with the wind and blizzard conditions we experienced, I am concerned about the cover.

Pictures are my son's car and our TV.
