50amp Power Cord

Question for you Voltage owners... Have any if you ever REALLY needed the full length, or even HALF of the length of the power cord that came with our rigs?

I've not measured it, and I can't seem to find any documentation that states the length... but I seem to remember hearing that it's 40'. And in the year & half I've had the rig, I can only recall one time I needed that length... and that was only because I ended up in place that was nothing more than a farmers field with a few power & water outlets plumbed in.

Everywhere else I've been, the power box has been located within 10' of where power-point is located on the side of the rig. And since we have to remove the entire cord from the reel...I end up trying to lay out 20+ feet of cord on the ground in such a way as to not be in a coil, and yet clear of the sewer & water lines.

Quite frankly, I'm getting kinda tired of doing this and am thinking of buying a shorter cord. But I'm just wondering if I've been extremely lucky at the places I've camped, or is having the power box so close a relativly rare thing?

I'd buy a new male and female plug. Then cut your cord off at say 15'. Plumb in the new plugs and you'd have a 15, 25, and 40' if you needed it.

I don't have a reel on mine (benefit of having a cheap, small camper) I think my stock cord is 20' it takes care of 98% of my needs, I also carry another 20' that I can plug in as an extension if necessary. If I get more than 40' from a power point I guess it would be time to move the camper.

I bought a 30 amp as a spare. Most of the time unless its summer in the heat I don't need 50 amp service. Where my 30 amp service is at home I need to use the 50 amp cord as my 30 amp is to short. See when I put it in it was for my Teton which has the cord in the rear. As the Voltage is up front on the side & is 6' longer then my Teton the 30' 30 amp cord doesn't reach.

We camp track side at several NHRA Drag raceways and we have needed the majority of the cord almost every time. So, I guess it really depends on where you are camping.

One of our favorite sites and favorite spot is right on the front of the camper area with everyone else behind us; we face the lake. Trouble is, most people can't use this spot because, by mistake, the power outlet is about 40' back. Our extension cord makes it all ours!

Not a Voltage owner but, 95% of the time the stock cord has been more than enough. I have had a couple of times when I had to change my parking/direction of the camper to get power. I have gone the other direction and bought a 25' 50 amp extension for those just in case times.

We have one campground we are regulars at and our favorite site is a corner lot which is a finger extending out into the water. We use a 50-Amp extension cord there so that the ramp can double as my fishing dock. Other than that site we don't even carry the extra cord with us.

For me, I'd rather have too much cord than not enough.

Agreed... too much is always preferable to not enough. I hadn't planned on ditching the longer cord... just buying a shorter cord to use on a regular basis, and store the longer one in the generator compartment.

Although I do like sawpilot's idea, may have to look into that too.

I thinking of cutting mine in half also. But just worried if it rains and using the extension cord. Thats a lot of amps to hurt somebody.

You can get weather proof boots from someone like Hubbell or Marinco. We use them at work for our 50 amp 6/4 supply cords, they go over the twist lock fittings.

Keep it as is, put in a air hose recoiling spool and have retract when you want to put it away, this would keep it away from other hoses as well.
