3950 ground clearance

Just purchased a used 3950 toy hauler and we are very excited. Waiting for delivery. We had a 36' Zinger tt we always took two rigs to haul the side by side and motorcycles. I went over all the spots we camp and decided I would be able to make all the turns (I transport manufactured homes for a living). Now......I am worrying about the clearance of frame to ground. Does anybody know the measurement from frame to ground. Has anybody ever tried to raise one to get more ground clearance?

Not sure why you would need more ground clearance unless you were going to go major off roading with it. Axles are mounted below the springs so it will take some major work & $ to raise one.

I had to raise the rear jacks on our 3970, other than that clearance has never been an issue. have had it in some pretty harry spots at motocross parks.

Ok thanks. The jacks are what I was concerned with the most. A couple of the spots we camp have some dips and I was mainly worried about the jacks and clearance on the tail

Mine was very simple, four bolts just moved everything up one hole.

Thanks Mike for the link. That looks like a great idea. I will have to check out the jacks when it gets here and see if it has extra holes to raise them.

wow I like that one looks like it would work on anything. I'm assuming you built it yourself? I'm not sure about the laws in Washington about pulling 2nd trailer with fifth wheel but I could do the same thing without the receiver.

Since I've bent two sets of stabilizer jacks when I was towing a TT, it's probably just a matter of time before I take out my rollers.

The drag rails look like a great set up. I'm not worried if I scrape the frame, I just want to keep the skirting from getting damaged.

I can't use a receiver... the combined length limit is 65 ft in Texas and I'm right at 60 ft with the truck & trailer.

Enjoy that extreme boondocking!!!

Same here on the receiver- Michigan limit is 65'. I used to tandem tow when I had my Sunnybrook and we came in at 64'4". I like this idea. I have a set of heavy duty rollers ready to go on this winter, but this has me rethinking the rollers....

Not to hijack (and it doesnt make it right) but my neighbor towed literally many thousands of miles with his bass boat behind his travel trailer at 75'+ and DOT never stopped him. I understand the problems if you have an accident but just wanted to point out that in TX at least, it appears over length on non-commercial vehicles is not a hot button for authorities.

For the record, the most gracious law in the states is 75, and most are 65 and 70 long max lenghth. The receiver wasn't on my Raptor skids (where the trial and error period started with rollers). I had a tractor trailer shop install skids on both rigs, both about 5-7 inches lower than the rear of the rig (to resist damage on the odd parking lot entrance, etc). When the last fabricater asked I said i wanted a hitch this time. Its used mostly to toss the bike rack on the back for easy access to the bikes and keep the dinette easily accessible while traveling. It also adds increased strength in the mid section. On the Raptor, i literally had the 3 axles off the ground a few times, think deep wash on a logging road. There wasn't a roller i could find that was function on all terrain, nor strong enough to actually work.

Now, the boat story. We were visiting my in-laws in WA state and my father in law wanted to get rid of his boat... well, we wrote a check and hooked it up. Off we went... home to CO. 84' long! Towed like a charm, rear camera helped monitor for flats, and make sure she was weighted correctly.

True, we drove past check points, and numerous HP units in our 5 state journey at 84' feet long. Had an HP cruise beside us for a bit, not interested in us at all.

I think I'll stay within the legal limits...
I'm afraid if I was involved in an accident,
law enforcement would be very interested
if I was towing over weight/width/length and
the courts would probably hold it against me.
