3200 Counter Flip Up Extension

So, I have a 3200. It has a really cool flip up counter extension, I think other models have it too. Mine however was never put on very well, and eventually fell off while traveling on a really bumpy road. No big deal, I just removed it. The counter surface had to strips of particle board epoxied to it, not a good thing to secure screws to. So, I thought about gluing real wood back to it, but that would take a lot of time and effort cleaning up the bonding surfaces, so my big plan this time is to replace it with a real wood surface that's stained to match the interior of the trailer.

Has anybody else had issues with their counter extension, or did I get the Friday version? Great trailer though, this was just a little goofy.

I would be inclined to use bolts, nyloc nuts and fender washers.

It won't fall off again unless someone sits on it and rips the side of the cabinet off.

You didn't say how it fell off so one can only assume the screws pulled out of the thin paneling when it probably should have been screwed to the cabinet stiles instead. That's where mine is mounted so I don't think it would be necessary to go with the bolts, washers and nuts. If you go that way you'll no doubt have to enlarge the screw holes in the mounting brackets.

If you can't hit the stiles with the screws you may be able to get between the layers of paneling and add blocking there and then use the screws again.

We added plywood to the back of the thin paneling and addred a second flip up to our Rubicon 2900. Just large enough for the Mr. Coffee.

Mine didn't fall off. I don't recall what exactly I did to damage it but the screws ripped out from the two little strips. I haven't fixed it yet. I figured I would just re-adhere two pieces of wood under there.

Yeah, sorry, mine fell off because the screws pulled out of the particle board strips that were glued to the counter piece. The bracket hinges are secured to the cabinet fairly well.

I thought about using bolts, but I would like the counter top to be smooth, I'd probably spill a drink if it wasn't.

When I figure mine out I'll get some pics up. Seems easy enough to replace the particle board strips with wood if you got the time.

I would replace it with a peace of butcher block material. That way it would be lighter and have a good use making it a cutting board.

If the particle board is thick enough. Carefully drill the stripped screw holes out to say 3/8" glue or epoxy pieces of dowel into the holes and remount the counter top. I would think the particle board would have to be at least 1/2" thick to do this.
