Valve Stem Failure--Heads Up

I replaced the OEM tires last year and just assumed (I know, I know what assume means) that Discount Tire would put new valve stems on. I am thinking that they did not. This spring I got home from a trip and found one of my tires was low and that the valve stem was leaking. Took the tire back to Discount and they replaced the valve stem...end of problem. Uh, no it was not. I pulled the the trailer out tonight to load it up for a trip and discovered one of the other tires had a leaking valve stem. Now instead of heading out first thing I will pull it to Discount and have them replace the valve stems.

You didn't say if what type tires you had put on... but you may need higher rated valve stems too.

I replaced mine with Goodyear G614s, which required replace the standard 80 psi stems with 110 psi valve stems.

Just something you may wanna check...

I "upgraded" from a D load range to an E load tire. I was trusting that the tire "experts" ( ie the dealer) would match the valve stem to the tire. I may have "assumed" too much.

While I intend to upgrade to 17.5" tires/rims over the winter (4 cars back from a trailer who had a blowout and his trim was all over the road. wife is now a believer and doesn't object to the cost), I want to double check what everyone's OEM was. I have Westlake's, but they are Super ST's with a "L" rating". Same as everyone?

Just got to Discount-manager says the stems just go bad over time. I knew this but not in a year. I think they had a bad batch of them or they didn't replace then and left the original ones on. The only time my trailer is outside is when it is being used otherwise it is in an enclosed barn, so sun damage is not an issue.

Have metal valve stems installed then you know they wouldn't fail in a years time.

Sorry, but I gotta throw the Bullchit flag on that one...

Sure, they may begin to leak in 5-to 7 years... but they just don't go 'bad' overnight. It takes either a long time, or prolonged exposure to acidic conditions for rubber to deteriorate. But of course, you're not gonna win with the tire guy on this issue... it's not like you're gonna sue for that small amount... and they know it.

I agree... if you haven't already had new ones installed (but since you're there, I suspect you have), get some good quality, high psi rating metal stems.

He must be related to the guy who rotated my truck tires. The dummies were starting the lug nuts with an inpact wrench and cross threaded 2 on one hub. I only found out because I did the front brakes the nest morning(or tried to).

He tried to tell me that because my truck was high mileage, that the studs in the hub will "stretch" over time and cause cross threading. I resisted punching him and politely asked him to try to pretend my IQ was over 20.

When I replaced the tires last year, I installed metal T-valve stems and that way I can check the air pressure and adjust without taking of the TPMS sensor. Link to show what I'm referring too:
TPMS, TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEMS - T-VALVES

The good news is that Discount put all metal stems on at no charge and also swapped out my lug nuts. The shoddy OEM nuts had an aluminum cap on them them would not grip the body of the nut and start to slip at the higher torque these wheels need. They didn't charge for any of it.

Just wondering if all the Westlake's are "L" rated (75mph) or not.

Rusty, That's a great question, but with these tires, I don't go over 65...With my other 5th wheel, Fuzion, I did go 75 a few times, when we were getting run over down in Texas, but now that I know a little more about Trailer Tires, 65 is where I going to stay...I have had 2 blow outs, but that was years ago, with a TT

With all the blow-out talk, I didn't go over 62 on our last trip (2,800 miles). Just curious if they put the same tires on all the units.

2012-13 they installed the Akuret tires. Seems like starting with the 2014 models they switched to Westlakes. By what I've read the Akuret have had more failures than the Westlakes.

We have Westlake ST on our 2015 Denali and had a blow out coming home from the first trip since we bought it. It's going in Saturday for some non related warranty work and we will be discussing the tires. The tread came off in an entire circle - thank goodness as it didn't do any damage. They are Chinese tires, not rated for over 65 from what I've read. We have a trip coming up to Idaho and I am not comfortable driving that far with those tires. We are also looking into a monitoring system.

Tire monitoring system wouldn't help when tires spit the tread off or when you have a blow-out.

BNS, Not good hearing that you already had a Blow-out, I am getting ready to change my Westlakes, but I put over 20K on mind already....As to the tire monitoring, I had one on my other 5th wheel and had a blow out, it advised me, I was going 55mph at the time, I slowed down right away and didn't do any damage to the wheel or body of the RV....I think they help, you can't hear that far back, unless you have a window open all the time. I moved the monitor to this RV, so far so good. Good luck on your tires, they should be covered and they should give you the funds for a replacement, and then buy what ever tire you want! A Friend on here is trying out the Carlisle Tire, I'm waiting to see how they do, he travels a lot of miles in a year? Some have also tried the Goodyear G614's The RV's with just 4 tires have changed to size 17 tires, but I have 6 and to change Rims and Tires is a lot of funds right now......
