I see the OP opted for a different approach than the permanent installation. I put a hard wired protector in while I was reconfiguring my pass through storage area. I just cut the wires coming from the external power connector to the transfer switch box and wired it in there. I mounted it on the wall behind the panels. An optional install would have been to put it on the output side of the transfer switch box. The would have given me protection from both pedestal and generator power. (I may go back and change it later.)

It may not work with the generator. Most generators use a floating neutral which the EMS don't like.

If you take your basement wall out you will see the back of your fuse box and power distribution box.

Not in my 3200. The furnace is directly behind my power panel location and that area is not accessible.
