shocks supporting bed won't retract

Well lifted up the bed in the front slideout today for the first time looking for extra storage space. The sheet of wood that supports the mattress goes up and is supported by two telescoping "shocks." These apparently lock in the extended position and I haven't seen how to get them to retract. Had to remove the screws and lay them down to get the bed board back down.

What am I missing on these?
thanks

They are gas pressure shocks. One just pushes down on the bed to retract them. As far as removing them, all the ones I've seen have a clip at each end that holds the shock onto the ball mount that is mounted to the bed frame or bed platform, should you need to remove them again.

Pushing down on these didn't do anything. Probably haven't been extended in years. I didn't want to push so hard the screws came out of the wooden bed platform. I'll just take them out completely and see if I can compress them.

If they are gas springs you will never compress them by hand. It takes leverage. The fulcrum level principle.

I have never seen them get stronger, just weaker. Are they gas springs of a mechanical locking device. Is there a little locking tab like on screen door shocks?

Good luck.
