By pass valves

My question is this,, around Thanksgiving I winterized my 5ver. When I winterized it I had to remove 8 screws to remove a wooden grill type piece to get to the bypass valves on the hot water heater. Knowing later I would have to switch the by pass valves in warm weather I left the grill off. Now getting ready to head for warmer weather can I put the valves back in the summer position for now cause I really would like to put the grill back on before traveling a 1000 miles with it off. Wont put water in tanks till I get to a warmer climate, so what happens if I put valves in summer position but not add water

Did you use anti freeze or air? If you need to flush the system because you used anti freeze, you should leave them in the bypasss mode until you flush all the anti freeze out. If you used air, go ahead and reset them. I put hinges on my door so I didn't need to deal with the screws.

Hi, you can't open the hot water heater valve until you flush the anti-freeze. Put the grill back on if you want but you'll have to remove it again later. The purpose of the bypass system is to keep anti-freeze out of the hot water heater/tank.
