I have been in 2 different 5th wheels since 2005. My first one was a cougar and now a voltage. Until a few months ago, I used shortbed trucks (3 different ones). Had an f250 with the b&w non-slide companion and never had an issue but I was always careful. If I seen that I was going to have to make a tight turn in a campgroung or at home, I would have my wife watch the back of the cab and make sure I wouldn't hit. Then traded trucks and have been using a reese slider for about 9 years and have never had to slide it. I now have an 8ft bed so I don't worry about it. My point is this, you can get by without one if you're careful especially with some of the newer 5th wheels that have the rounded nose. It's up to you.
