Slide roof & beam above slide repair project

I posted in the new members welcome forum that I was starting a repair project on my 2006 Dutchmen 28F-DSL. So far I have pulled the roof off of the slide and was hoping to make the repairs in a few days, as it turns out I found some damage to the beam above the slide as well. This will take quite a bit of extra time to repair. So I had to spend the day today making room in my barn so that I can get my rv under shelter to finish making all the repairs. So for now, I thought I would post some pics of what I have done so far (which is demolition to this point). I will post some more pics as I move forward with the project.

I accomplished my goal of getting my RV in my shop today. The problem I had was that my shop was closed in on the end, and I didn't have enough eve height to get it inside the shop. So with some rain in the forecast, I decided to open up about 12' of metal siding so I could get it out of the rain. I have virtually no room let over but it is out of the rain and I can work on it at my own pace now, without having to rush things.

West, I don't see any siding damage, but if you need any metal work, you can go to Hemet Valley RV.net....800-966-4878, they will make anything you need?

That is one of my biggest concerns since it has turned into a bigger repair than just replacing the top on the slide. I've got it inside on a level concrete surface so that should help some. Any other ideas for keeping the slide square would be appreciated.

Seeing how the slide is out, put screw jacks under it so you can keep it square. Use several, even a beam underneath if you need to. You may need to do the same to the trailer too. I have rebuilt a couple of Airstreams and by using screw jacks you could make minor adjustments to get things tweaked back to where they belonged. Same principle applies in this case.

West, Great on the Screw jacks.....When you are ready to remove the beam, place another beam next to it and screw to the roof to keep it square, remove the bad beam and replace, replace the boards on the roof of the slide, ONE at a Time....How is the plywood Ceiling?

The ceiling in the slide is good just, a portion of the roof, some of the 2×2 framing as well. However, I am replacing all the decking and roof membrane...

I think that if I had to replace the slide decking I would use the Georgia Pacific brand of solar radiant barrier. That slide box does get hot so something to reflect the heat couldn't hurt.
One consideration I'd look into is, would the reflected heat be hurtful to the rubber roof coating.

Well, it's been awhile since I've been able to work on this project, but I'm taking a couple of days off this week and I hope to get most of it done this weekend. One of the things that I have been trying to figure out was how to support the roof so that I can remove the 26' beam above the slide opening (water damaged and sagging). Initially, I planned to put some dummy legs on the inside for support, but then I would have to work over the slide because I don't have the room to remove the slide. I bought an LVL beam to replace the 2x6 that is there now. The LVL is 12" wide by 30' long, but I only need 5 1/2" by 26' long, so I'm going to take the other 6.5" X 30' that is left over and use it to support the roof from the outside. I plan to use 2x4's to support it a foot or so above the edge of the roof line and then use 2x2s every 4 or 5' to support the roof so I can then remove the old beam. This will be much easier because I can do this with the slide in, and it will make it easier to raise the sagging roof back to where it needs to be to get the new beam in. I will post some pics of this when I'm done.

I finally finished my roof repair project, and feel that it still turned out to be a really good deal in spite of the repairs. I paid $3000 for it, put approximately $1500 in it and then I sold my old pop up for $1000, so I have about $3500 out of pocket in the camper plus the sweat equity. I was quoted anywhere from $2500-5000 for repairs from the local rv repair shops. Thanks again for all the input. I have attached a few more pics of the project, and a few pics from our first trip, which was to the mountains of Alabama.

Thanks guys, it was worth it in the end, but I did wonder a few times along the way...LOL

The main issue I ran into was a 20' 9" long by 1.5" wide x 5.5" tall opening above the slide. There is no way to span that distance with a 2x6 without a sag, so I put in a 1.75" x 20' 9" LVL that I had cut done to that size, but it sagged too. I eventually had to jack the beam back up in place to pull the sag out and add a piece of 1/4" x 5" x 20' plate steel to the side of the beam, but that brought everything out 1/2" total (the extra width on the beam and the 1/4" plate steel). So I had to build out the trim that my wiper seal would attach to so the sides would match the top. So I used a piece of 1/2" x 2" aluminum on the sides and a piece of 1/4 x 2" aluminum across the top, and that matched everything up close enough to make it seal up without any issues. By the way, in the pics of the slide in my shop I hadn' finished up trimming the roof membrane and it was still hanging out below the trim piece (didn't want yall to think I left it that way)...
