Pick-Up Prices

Just read in this morning's paper; average price of a new pick-up is $46,517. That's a lot of scratch!

I borrowed 50k in 1997 to build a 2300 sq ft. house
with an attached 2 car garage.

That is more than I paid for my first two houses... combined!

Trucks ain't cheap, which is why I don't buy them new, but keep them until they fall apart! Newest truck on the property is a 2003 F150 with 248,000 miles on it, paid for. The oldest is a 1947 Chevy 1.5 ton and we have no clue how many miles are on it.

I actually bought new because the used trucks were keeping their value. Was looking for a 2-3 year old truck... For $4000 more I got a brand new one with zero miles and full factory warranty and a lower APR than buying used.

All the used ones at the time were averaging 20k+ miles a year based on their age. Ridiculous.

Five years later my truck private sales for only $6k less than I bought it for. That is the upside... and I plan on keeping it for as long as she'll run.

It's true, trucks can be dolled up to reach hefty price tags.

But on the other hand, trucks can be equipped and priced in such a fashion that they are the most amazing $value when compared to other vehicles.

Example: A new F150 in crew-cab, XLT trim, 302A package (sweet stuff), smaller ecoboost 375lb and 325hp, Sport console.

In Texas that truck can be bought for $30-31k

There are Honda Civics that cost more than that!

In my opinion, the 3 American truck manufacturers are building the most amazing trucks ever.

And if you can just avoid most of the whipped cream luxuries, they are SO much vehicle for the money!

Having said all that, I keep most of my trucks too. I'd rather give them to a family member than trade them for a painful (depreciated) price.

Every time I get one, some grandkid or nephew takes dibs on it.

I think what gets most of us old geezers is we remember when pickups cost less than $10k. I remember buying a brand new 1978 F250 Camper Special for work, it cost $7800, and was well equipped. I bought my first house that year too, it was about double what the truck cost. So I guess things haven't changed too much, just the numbers have gotten bigger.

Yea, I remember what it felt like when my grandpa reached in his pocket and said "let's see what I got in here for ya"

He'd hand me a dime. Or a QUARTER!!!

Oh the purchasing power he just bestowed on me!

My grandkids would stare at me in disbelief if it were a coin. Lol

My grandmother sent me $5 for my birthday every year, all the way up until the year she died. I was in my 40's! :lol

I've bought a new truck about every 5 years or 100K miles my whole life. With the sticker prices on these new trucks it makes we want to keep my mine way past that!!!

We typically run ours 300k which is about 15 years or so of driving. I probably won't buy another new one, but gently used. Diesels we usually keep to the 500-750k range and they are pushing 20 years old. We have one old 96 F350 4x4 that the odometer broke at 500k, it is still chugging along here on the farm. Bride's 03 F150 4.6 V-8 has 250k on it and isn't going anywhere soon. It is semi retired. I did get her to buy a new 2015 Fusion Hybrid, it already has 50k on it, loving the high 40's mpg. [emoji6]

I tend to keep the heavy duty trucks far longer.
I guess I look at them like they are still capable of doing what I got them for in the first place. Thus the old 03 cummins and the 01 7.3 still doing the heavy lifting around here. (Technically, my brother next door took ownership of the 7.3. He LOVES that old truck)

The 1/2 tons end up being dealt with like they are cars. (Which in my lifestyle, they actually are) As a result, there are a lot of family members driving my F150's, if you know what I mean.

So I could claim I never get rid of my trucks. They get miles put on them by more than just me.

Hi Aaron,

Did you rebuild the engine at some point to get those 248K miles? If those are the miles on the engine without a rebuild what kind and weight of oil are you currently running. I have about 195K miles on my motor.

Nope stock engine, no rebuild, according to my records we have replaced the water pump and alternator, rear end was rebuilt a couple of years ago (bad dealer experience). We use whatever oil the Ford dealer puts in, currently they are using some sort of high mileage oil in it, but it is Motorcraft branded.

The key is regular maintenance and not letting things go until they break. We change oil religiously every 5,000 miles, if we had a summer of towing every 3500 miles. So far it has worked on multiple trucks. I had a 1997 F150 4.2L V-6 that went over 320,000 miles on the original engine. That was a company truck and it was worn completely out when I turned it back in. They still managed to get $1500 for it.

Different animal, I understand but to Aaron's point - my 2002 VW Beetle TDI currently has 311,000 miles on it and going strong. Regular maintenance and a good quality oil.

I'll be looking for a used pickup to replace my 2003 Excursion. Enterprise car sales has tons of pickups that will tow my Coleman 1705, many at $24 to $29,000. I can afford that. I can't afford 40K plus.

If you're not picky on options and color, hang in there. Prices will drop rapidly now that 18's are rolling out. You may be able to pick up a basic 2017 close to your range.
