Mattress improvements for 172e HTT?

DW and I are looking to upgrade the 80x60 mattress in our 172e Hybrid. Do most folks replace the entire mattress? Or opt for a topper to place on top? Or maybe just a thick/nice pillowtop mattress pad?

We'd still like to be able to fold up the beds, though, if possible.

We put a foam topper on ours, it's now super comfortable. I can still get to the under bed storage.

RV queen short?

We just got a Zinus Sleep Master Deluxe Spring 10 Inch Pillow Top RV / Camper / Trailer / Truck Mattress, Short Queen. $279.99 free delivery. It came in a 4ft X 2ft X 2ft box. it is a innerspring mattress compressed in the box made in China. It weighs 87 pounds and when you open it it springs out like a lifeboat! We have been sleeping on the cheap one that came with the trailer we put a 2" foam topper on it and it was OK but lately our backs a a bit stiff when getting up in the morning. We should have done it years ago but it was not our priority. Check it out on The big on line store that starts with a A.

mattress topper

found a very good foam 4" topper at Bed and Bath - heavy little bugger - anyway - we put it on top of the silly mattress that came with the trailer and we have really enjoyed it - so very comfortable and I had a coupon so it was only $160 - watch for the 20% off coupons

I use a foam topper on my mattress. Bought it for our first trip, but didn't get it cut down and put on our bed until day two (we have a short queen and the topper was too long). The foam topper on the plywood board is more comfortable than the mattress that came with the RV!! I'm not sure how it would fold while on top of your current mattress, but it might be a possible mattress replacement?

Oh ... and I found mine during a 50% off sale a $10 in Kohl's cash and a 30% off coupon ... otherwise the price is a shocker!

Dutchmen mattress makes my back hurt

Has anyone replaced the stock mattress with a good quality inflatable air bed?

I added 7 inches to the bed frame (plywood)
then bought a regular queen mattress and got rid of the stock camper queen

Thanks for the reply

The Kodiak unit that I have is an expandable (186E). The beds are an integral part of the frame and fold out sort of like a pop-up. Expansion wouldn't be an option. The mattress that Dutchman provides are very uncomfortable, there are already many post confirming that. Looking at alternatives to solve this problem, a good quality inflatable might work. Has anybody tried this approach?

I used a memory foam pad covered by a nice quilted mattress pad. Works wonders for me and the wife.

We went to ROSS and purchased a quality 2" mattress topper (memory foam) and put it on top of the mattress that was there. made an awesome difference. Now the sheets even fit since it is the right height for the corners.

Replacement mattress

Just spent 3 weeks in Colorado in the mighty 2010 Kodiak 24RBSL. The new $279.00 mattress we got from the big on-line store that starts with A is better than the $1,000.00 one we have at home!! Do not waste your money on a topper from Wallyworld. Get the one I suggested. I only wish I would have got it when I first bought the trailer!!

Won't work in an expandable

I have a Kodiak186E expandable. I'm sure that the mattress from the "A" store is great but it won't work in an expandable because to store the mattress it must fold. I just returned from being out for a week camping. I have replaced the mattress???? that Dutchmen supplied with a good quality inflatable air mattress. It works fine. For me the problem is solved.
