Considering Purchase of Kodiak 201QB

Been the owner of a Starcraft pop up for almost 8 years and have decided to upgrade to a newer travel trailer. I've been taking my time and looking around and one of the models I have liked so far is the Kodiak 201QB.

Was wondering if anyone else on the forum has or currently owns a Kodiak 201QB and what their thoughts were? What is the good and bad?

If I do buy new, is Dutchmen pretty good about honoring warranty work or does that depend more on the dealer? I've found two dealers that currently have these travel trailers and each are probably over 2 hours from me.

Outside of forums, dealer websites and the manufacturers are there other resources to find out about manufacturer's reputations, quality of product, etc.? I've found a some companies that sell their rating books or organizations (rv.org) that do the same. Has anyone purchased these items and were they any benefit?

I appreciate your advice and time in advance, thanks!

Hi, welcome!

There aren't really any decent rating sites for RV manufacturers. IMHO the dealer is the most important component. They can be checked out via Google reviews and the BBB.

The other most important thing is to do a thorough inspection and walk through of the trailer (PDI) BEFORE signing on the dotted line. If anything major comes up it may be better to walk away.

Most warranties aren't worth the paper they are written on. The dealer is going to be key in making that aspect work for you.

Good Luck and let us know how you make out.

Aaron

Good luck in your search. Personally, I would stick with the forums. Like you, I did a ton of research before buying my unit. I stumbled upon this site. 1). There are some guys who regularly post here that I wish (and I know they could) have built my unit. Very smart guys with tons of experience. 2). People on this site are very patient and polite. No question is too basic and no one slams the comments. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and people here know there is more than one way to accomplish a task. As far as buying a unit, everyone will tell you that for the most part, unless you're dropping 150 grand or so, they are all pretty much built the same. Much more important to find a good dealer and develop a relationship with him, even if it is some distance away. If you're lucky and you do a thorough PDI, you may only have to go back and visit for warranty work once. Happy searching.

Welcome to the forum.

What Aaron and Rusty said.

Take it from someone that had a crap dealer.

Leave your emotions at home the day of delivery, be very picky and DO NOT finalize the deal until absolutely everything is working as it should. If you do take deilery before stuff is right, you will get caught up in the point the finger pointing game. There's plenty of folks here that have had their campers held hostage at the dealer for months. In one case the camper sat on the dealers lot for 10 months in the first year.

Thanks everyone for your advice and replies. So far I've done mostly looking at the dealerships that I've been to as I hadn't made up my mind regarding what travel trailer I really wanted to purchase. I didn't want it to seem like I was wasting their time or mine getting into a pricing conversation when I wasn't completely sold. But, I will keep that in mind and do some research on the dealerships with potential units.

I'm trying to be patient wondering if I wait a little longer that I could potentially get a better deal since camping season will start to slow down. However, there is a dealer that I haven't visited yet that I may go to on Saturday to have a second look at the Kodiak units. I'll keep you all posted. Thanks again for your time.

Other guys know better, but I believe the RV industry brings models out twice a year. The spring is the big change but around September I was told when buying mine, that they tweak the production line a bit in September and throw in a few add-on's or come out with a new color. Ask your dealer. Just an FYI.
