Great Sand Dunes National Park in Colorado - Our favorite!

We spent a couple of nights in July at the Great Sand Dunes National Park in south central Colorado. It is a family favorite!

We found a great spot in the unreserved loop early on a Sunday afternoon. It's awesome to sit by the campfire and watch the sun set over the dunes. We hiked the dunes, went to the visitor center, and watched the deer wander through the campground.

Entrance to the park is just $3.00 per adult and is good for a week. No electric, but there are flush toilets and the scenery makes up for not having hookups.

I included a picture of our campsite and one from the top of the dunes (I finally made it to the top at age 51!) where you can see a couple camping in the dune field.

By the way, this was our first real trip with our 2015 Coleman CTS192RD that we purchased last December. It is fantastic!

Looks like a nice place. Do they have a area there to ride on the dunes with quads?
Thanks for sharing!!!

Since it is a national park, there are pretty strict limits on activities on the dunes. As far as I know, quads are not allowed on the dunes. The closest thing would be the 4-wheel drive road around the edge of the dunes that goes up over the mountains.

They do rent sleds, skis, and other similar things in Alamosa that you can use to slide down the dunes.

The Dunes are a great place. I've had some friends who were old timers in the San Luis Valley that had hiked up the dunes with old scoop shovels and thought they would ride them down the dunes like a sled--they said by the time they realized their back ends were on fire they going too fast to get off!!

As noted, there is a sort of road that follows the creek around the East side of the dunes and goes up over Medano Pass and down to CO Hwy 69 about 26 miles South of Westcliffe, CO.

Back in the early 80's went and camped on Medano every Memorial Day weekend and a couple more times a Summer.

Went up there about three years ago in the RZR only to find the trail closed at the top to "unlicensed vehicles". At that time RZR was not licensed. Is now, but haven't had time to get back there.

Anyway, we would drive down the Medano Pass trail to the edge of the sand dunes, then follow the creek, then up out into parking lot. They would let us go out of the park to the stores and then come back at no charge.

Might be worth asking at the gate.
